New Horrified D&D Expansion Coming from Ravensburger

In August 2025, Ravensburger released Horrified: Dungeons & Dragons, a new take on their popular Horrified board game series. The standalone product built on the existing Horrified rules while also introducing a number of unique mechanics and monsters from D&D lore. The end result was generally well received among both fans and critics alike, managing to stand out among a slew of new D&D board games that have hit the market over the past few years.

Now, it looks like Ravensburger is rolling the dice once again, with the company recently teasing an image for a new Horrified D&D Expansion slated for release sometime in the Fall of 2026. So just what new terrors await in this latest bone chilling board game? Below, we try and scare up an answer.

What is the original Horrified D&D board game about?

Horrified: Dungeons & Dragons is a co-operative board game designed for one to five players and is based on the popular Horrified: Universal Monsters game, which has since released several other versions, including Horrified: World of Monsters, Horrified: Greek Monsters and Horrified: American Monsters.

The D&D version is set in Undermountain, the sprawling, monster-filled mega dungeon located beneath the streets of the city of Waterdeep in the Forgotten Realms. Your goal is to work with other players to defeat four different D&D monsters (the Beholder, the Mimic, the Displacer Beast and the Red Dragon) by solving a specific mini-game style puzzle associated with that creature.

Players take on the role of one of five different iconic D&D classes: The Rogue, The Wizard, The Fighter, The Cleric and The Bard. On your turn you can choose from a variety of actions, including: moving, collecting an item, directing NPCs to safety, solving a monster’s puzzle, battling a monster or using a class ability (this latter action involves rolling the D20 that comes with the game, which is a first for the Horrified series).

The fun comes from attempting to outmaneuver monsters and working collaboratively with other players by stringing together various actions and abilities. There’s also an element of unpredictability in that after each player turn you draw from a random monster deck, and monsters themselves also have their own abilities which are determined using the game’s D20. In many ways, Horrified is quite similar to the popular board game Pandemic, in that players work together, have a wide range of actions to choose from and are essentially racing against the clock to complete objectives.

What is the new Horrified D&D expansion?

So far, details are still pretty thin on what’s included in the new Horrified D&D expansion. The teaser image shared by Ravensburger on social media features a creepy, puppet-like figure that veteran D&D players quickly identified as a Carrionette, a lesser-known monster from the 2021 D&D supplement Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft.

Carrionettes begin life as beloved toys or dolls, animated by obsessive love. They appear harmless (sometimes even adorable) until they strike, using a massive needle to rip a victim’s soul from their body. The soul is then trapped inside the toy, while the Carrionette steals the victim’s body and walks away wearing their life.

While we don’t know if the Carrionette will appear in the new D&D Horrified expansion, the monster’s appearance does suggest that Ravenloft may be the primary focus. That makes sense given the horror focus of the Domains of Dread and, in fact, many fans questioned why Ravenloft wasn’t used when Ravensburger first announced they were creating a version of Horrified using the Dungeons & Dragons license.

When will the new Horrified D&D expansion come out?

The new expansion will be launching in the Fall 2026 (although no firm date has been announced). Ravensburger also hasn’t clarified whether the expansion will see a wide retail launch or debut as a limited Gen Con exclusive, as some previous Horrified releases have done.

We’ll update this page with more information as soon as we have an exact date.

Final thoughts

If this latest expansion is indeed based on Ravenloft, it could be exactly what Horrified: Dungeons & Dragons needs, with the setting offering a ton of creepy lore and monsters to draw on. And while there’s still much we don’t know about what will be included in this new expansion, if it’s anything like it’s predecessor, it will likely be a ton of terrifying fun.

We’ll be keeping a close eye on this story in the days ahead and will update this page with new information as it’s made available. In the meantime, you can learn more about the original Horrified D&D game on the Ravensburger website.
